Manufacturing is the process of making things. I like making things. I like being a builder.
So when I see something broken I want to fix it.
Like this handle for a side sliding kitchen window.
I could have gone to the hardware store and found some generic replacement...
I could have searched Amazon for a replacement...
Instead I opted to design a better handle in SolidWorks and 3D print it.
This design has some unique features.
I had to keep the mounting points thin on the back side to prevent it from hitting the frame when it was closed.
I also like the triangle design because it's like an arrow pointing the direction to open the window. It draws attention to itself.
It looks different from a standard handle design but it works exceptionally well and feels sturdy when used.
To me that's the real difference. It FEELS good when you use it. It doesnt feel cheap and flimsy. This window gets opened almost every day and having a handle that stands out without being (or making) a sore thumb is very satisfying.
Some people say form follows function. Why cant we have both? If it can do its job and look and feel good then why compromise?
3D printers are changing the world we live in. This is so awesome!
